State of law: The framework will not be subject to an American veto regarding the Maliki file.

On Wednesday, the State of Law Coalition said its members within the Coordination Framework have enough flexibility to resolve the ongoing crisis over the nomination of coalition leader Nouri al-Maliki. They stressed that they reject any outside interference, including what some have called a potential U.S. veto targeting national figures.

Coalition member Wael al-Jassem told dinaropinions.com that, despite heavy internal and external pressures, the Framework is capable of solving the nomination issue through national dialogue and focusing on Iraq’s best interests. “This is far removed from the politics of imposing wills,” he said.

Al-Jassem added that rumors of an American veto on certain names, including al-Maliki, will not affect the Framework’s decision. “The political choice must be purely Iraqi and independent of any influence Washington may try to exert on the Iraqi scene,” he explained.

He also noted that the nomination crisis will not threaten the unity of the Framework. “There are national options and alternatives that can achieve consensus,” he said. Al-Jassem called for bold moves to break the political deadlock and put forward a candidate with broad national support—one who can lead the state free from narrow political calculations.
