In the presence of the gentlemen, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani presided over a meeting today, Monday, to discuss the issue of old brick factories and their impact on urban areas; the Deputy Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Minister of Industry, and a number of advisors.
“The steps to move the old brick factories from the city of Nahrawan, due to their location near residential cities, their environmental impacts, and their use of old machinery that is not compatible with the development and urban renaissance that the country is witnessing, in addition to their exploitation of children and women in work, and the lack of work permits for many of them, and the pollution they cause,” was the topic of discussion at the meeting.
In this regard, Al-Sudani gave the Ministry of Industry the order to carry out a geological survey in order to select alternative locations that meet the needs of the environment, have basic requirements for raw materials, and have a road system for transportation. These locations should be far from residential areas and outside of the new cities that are being built. They should also emphasize to factory owners the use of modern technology that takes into account the environment in alternative locations.
Additionally, he instructed the Ministry of Industry to prepare a mechanism regarding the provision of suitable alternative areas in all governorates for the construction of brick factories in accordance with the confirmed conditions. This mechanism will be discussed at the subsequent meeting of the Higher Committee for Coordination between the Governorates.
