On Sunday, the Ministry of Oil announced that they have completed drilling the longest horizontal section of an oil well in the Tanuma reservoir, located east of Baghdad. Along with this, they have also opened a new crude oil processing unit in the same field.
The Ministry has issued a statement stating that the drilling of the longest horizontal section of an oil well has been completed in the Tanuma reservoir, which is located to the east of Baghdad. The horizontal section is 2,826 meters long and has a depth of 5,449 meters.
During a celebration, the Director General of the Central Oil Company, Muhammad Yassin Hassan, confirmed that they had completed drilling the longest horizontal section of an oil well in Iraq, in collaboration with the Kocel Company. He highlighted the significance of this achievement, as the long section would compensate for the drilling of three regular horizontal wells. This would lead to significant cost reductions and production rates that are three times higher than regular horizontal wells and five times higher than vertical wells. It would also help overcome the problem of population centers in the oil field, which may hinder drilling operations.
He explained that drilling operations can be carried out beneath residential areas without causing any harm to the inhabitants. This technique also solves the problem of acquiring multiple sites for drilling, as one site can be used to extract oil from various locations. The speaker expressed hope that this modern technology would be used to extract oil from the region, particularly the residential areas to the west of the Diyala River where no available space exists for drilling oil wells. The solution proposed is to drill long horizontal sections underneath these areas.
The general manager inaugurated the First Bank Oil Processing Project (CPF) in the East Baghdad field, which will serve as the operations center for the southern region.
During his speech at the celebration, he expressed his appreciation for the Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Oil Minister, Hayan Abdul Ghani, for his continuous support of the company’s efforts at various levels. He emphasized that the project is the outcome of the ongoing cooperation between the Central Oil Company and the Chinese Zhenhua Company.
“He highlighted the tireless and sincere efforts of the staff at Central Oil Company in completing this crucial project, which will significantly contribute to supporting and boosting the national economic system, as well as the service program of the government.”
The Director General, along with the General Managers of Chinese companies Zhenhua and IPS, and several directors of Central Oil Company departments, conducted a field tour to inspect the CPF oil processing unit and its production lines. This was followed by another field tour of the oil processing unit at the S1 site in eastern Baghdad, in the southern region, to view the central control unit, its production lines, and the other components of the processing unit.
