The Iraqi Ministry of Transport has announced a series of major initiatives aimed at expanding investment and development in the country’s maritime transport sector, marking one of the most ambitious modernization efforts in recent years.
According to the ministry’s media office, and under the direction of Minister Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, the plan focuses on upgrading Iraq’s marine services, opening new shipping routes, and strengthening cooperation with leading international maritime and shipbuilding companies.
The goal is to lift existing restrictions on Iraq’s commercial fleet and boost the country’s shipping capacity in line with its growing economic and trade activities.
Expanding Global Shipping Routes
The Director General of the General Company for Maritime Transport, Eng. Ahmed Al-Asadi, confirmed that the opening of new maritime routes with Arab, Asian, and European countries—especially a direct line with China—has led to a noticeable rise in the number of commercial vessels arriving at Iraqi ports.
He added that the ministry has already begun receiving proposals from specialized international companies for joint operations, ship leasing, and vessel provision to enhance competition in government cargo transport.
New Fleet Development
Al-Asadi also revealed that contracts for the construction of eight new vessels are currently being reviewed by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers. Once approved, these ships will become part of Iraq’s national fleet, expanding its maritime presence and trade capacity.
Digital and Operational Reforms
The Ministry of Transport reported significant progress in digital transformation across the maritime sector. The ministry’s electronic control center has improved transparency, reduced costs, and enhanced efficiency by automating voyage tracking, cargo management, and daily operational oversight through real-time data systems.
International Compliance and Training
Iraq has now completed ratification of over 30 international maritime agreements and protocols, many of which relate to safety inspections, vessel standards, and crew training.
The ministry emphasized that Iraq is adopting the latest International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards, including modern technologies, electronic management, and professional certification programs for maritime personnel to ensure safe and legally compliant operations aboard ships.
A Step Toward Economic Diversification
Officials say these initiatives represent an important step toward diversifying Iraq’s economy, strengthening its logistics infrastructure, and positioning the country as a key player in regional maritime trade.
The expansion of routes and modernization of the national fleet come as Iraq continues to invest in port infrastructure, shipping services, and foreign partnerships to reduce reliance on neighboring countries for transport and logistics.
