Transportation: More than 2,000 transit flights through Iraq in the first half of the year

The Ministry of Transport says Iraq is about to see a big jump in land transit traffic this year. Officials expect more than 2,000 freight trucks to pass through Iraqi territory in the first half of the year under the international TIR transit system.

According to the ministry, this growth is happening because roads, border facilities, and procedures have improved, making it easier and faster for trucks to move through the country.

Maitham Al-Safi, Director of the Ministry’s Media Office, explained that the General Company for Land Transport acts as Iraq’s local guarantor under the TIR system. In simple terms, it organizes and monitors trucks crossing Iraq, works closely with border authorities, and makes sure everything follows international rules. The goal is smooth, safe transit without delays or complications.

He added that the next step will be linking transport systems electronically with the General Directorate of Traffic. This digital connection is meant to speed things up, reduce paperwork, and improve accuracy and transparency, especially when tracking trucks moving inside Iraq and across border points.

Al-Safi said these steps are part of wider reforms aimed at modernizing Iraq’s transport sector. By using modern technology and cutting red tape, the ministry hopes to make goods move faster, lower costs, and support the national economy.

He also noted that the growing number of transit trips shows increasing trust from international companies. More operators now see Iraq as a safe and efficient transit route, which helps boost non-oil revenues and revive the transport and logistics sectors.

Finally, he pointed out that the ministry already has a full database of private-sector trucks. This system helps regulate land transport, supports future planning, and improves efficiency across this important sector.
