U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that there is currently no agreement with Iran, stressing that any deal would require what he described as Iran’s “unconditional surrender.”
Speaking at a press conference, Trump said, “There will be no agreement with Iran except unconditional surrender.” He added that after such a step, a new leader would be chosen for Iran—someone he described as “great and acceptable.”
Trump also said the United States would work with its allies and partners to help stabilize Iran’s economy and pull the country back from what he called the brink of collapse.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said earlier Friday that several countries have begun mediation efforts to stop the ongoing war involving the United States and Israel.
Pezeshkian said Iran supports efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the region, but added that mediators should approach the countries he accused of starting the conflict and disrespecting the Iranian people.
The fighting has intensified since late February, with U.S. and Israeli strikes hitting targets inside Iran, while Tehran has responded with missile and drone attacks toward Israel and what it calls American interests in the region.
These exchanges have led to casualties, including civilians and security officials, and have caused damage to infrastructure such as ports and residential buildings across several areas.
