US Firm Cleared for Iraq Floating Gas Terminal

Iraq is moving forward with a new plan to boost its electricity supply.

The country’s Council of Ministers has approved a deal allowing the Ministry of Electricity to contract Excelerate Energy to build a floating platform that will import liquefied natural gas (LNG).

This step is part of a wider effort to set up a floating LNG import terminal. The approval comes under Cabinet Decision No. 878 of 2025.

Back in October, the Ministry of Electricity reached an agreement with Excelerate Energy to bring in a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). The unit is designed to handle up to 15 million cubic metres of gas per day.

The deal is set for five years and can be renewed.

The goal is simple: secure more gas to keep power plants running and reduce pressure on the national grid. By importing LNG, Iraq hopes to diversify its gas sources and better meet growing electricity demand across the country.

For a nation that often struggles with power shortages, this floating terminal could become a key part of the solution.
