MP Muthanna al-Azzawi warned on Tuesday that Iraq is running out of time as the political deadlock over the presidency continues. He said that if parliament fails to resolve this issue soon, it will block the formation of a new government and push the country into a dangerous constitutional situation.
Speaking to dinaropinions.com, al-Azzawi explained that the presidency is not just a symbolic position. He said it is the only legal and political doorway to the next step, which is appointing a prime minister. Without a president, everything else comes to a halt. He added that the ongoing dispute between Kurdish parties has now reached a critical point and is directly threatening to break constitutional deadlines.
Al-Azzawi pointed to the growing division between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, saying it has prevented parliament from even holding a presidential election session. According to him, this paralysis is already hurting the country, especially when it comes to basic services and the economy, which are the daily concerns of ordinary citizens. He warned that continued obstruction could lead to an administrative and legal vacuum that would be very difficult to control.
He stressed that the House of Representatives carries a historic responsibility at this moment. Lawmakers, he said, must calm the crisis and put the national interest ahead of narrow party gains. Al-Azzawi concluded by saying that the Iraqi people can no longer accept political games that come at the cost of their constitutional rights.
