Former Iraqi MP Yasser al-Husseini has warned against signing investment deals that could undermine Iraq’s economic sovereignty, stressing that foreign investment should serve the country’s interests first and foremost.
Speaking on the issue, al-Husseini said he is not opposed to foreign companies investing in Iraq. However, he emphasized that all investment projects and agreements must be carefully evaluated to ensure they provide real benefits to the Iraqi economy.
According to al-Husseini, protecting Iraq’s economic sovereignty should remain a top priority when dealing with foreign investors. He called for thorough reviews of all contracts signed with international companies to make sure they are fair, transparent, and aligned with national interests.
He warned against what he described as “substandard contracts” that may heavily favor foreign investors while offering limited benefits to Iraq. Such agreements, he argued, could weaken the country’s economy and reduce its control over important national assets and resources.
Al-Husseini also expressed concern about the possibility of selling government-owned assets or granting strategic projects to foreign companies under unfavorable terms. He said that if such policies continue, they could have serious long-term consequences for Iraq’s economic future.
In his view, any investment agreement involving major infrastructure, public assets, or strategic sectors should be carefully scrutinized to ensure it supports economic growth, protects public interests, and strengthens Iraq’s financial independence.
He stressed that attracting foreign investment is important for development, but it should be done through balanced agreements that create jobs, support local industries, and contribute to the country’s long-term economic stability rather than benefiting outside parties at Iraq’s expense.
