Coinbase has expanded its trading offerings by launching 24/7 access to U.S.-regulated gold and silver futures, giving eligible traders the ability to trade precious metals almost any time, including weekends and holidays.
The new products are available through Coinbase Derivatives Exchange and mark another step in the company’s effort to move beyond cryptocurrencies and offer a wider range of financial products.
Under the new system, traders can access gold futures contracts representing one troy ounce of gold and silver futures contracts representing 50 troy ounces of silver. Coinbase said the products are available through participating brokerage platforms, including Interactive Brokers and NinjaTrader.
The launch introduces a different approach to precious metals trading. Traditionally, commodity markets operate during fixed hours and often close on weekends and public holidays. Coinbase’s new setup allows traders to react to market developments around the clock without waiting for markets to reopen.
This flexibility can be especially important during periods of economic uncertainty, major geopolitical events, or unexpected news that can quickly affect the prices of gold and silver.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong highlighted the launch as part of the company’s broader vision of bringing the always-open nature of crypto markets to traditional financial assets.
Gold and silver remain among the world’s most widely used stores of value. Investors often turn to precious metals during times of inflation, market volatility, or economic uncertainty. Gold alone is estimated to have a market value of more than $13 trillion, while silver’s market value exceeds $1 trillion.
The move also supports Coinbase’s long-term strategy of becoming an “Everything Exchange” that offers access to multiple asset classes through a single platform.
Over the past few years, Coinbase has expanded beyond spot cryptocurrency trading into derivatives, perpetual futures, and other financial products. Adding precious metals is another step toward creating a broader investment ecosystem.
The company already offers gold and silver perpetual futures to eligible users outside the United States. Those products are designed for crypto-native traders and settle in USDC. The new U.S.-regulated futures contracts provide a more traditional option for domestic investors.
Coinbase also believes the smaller contract sizes could make precious metals trading more accessible to a wider range of market participants. While commodity futures have traditionally been dominated by institutional investors, the new structure may appeal to both retail and professional traders looking for exposure to gold and silver.
For many traders, the biggest advantage is simple: they can now manage their precious metals positions whenever market conditions change, without being limited by traditional trading hours.
