The Asia-Pacific Group made its decision on Saturday, and as a result, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday that Iraq has been chosen to lead China and the Group of 77 (G77) at the United Nations in 2025.

Acting Iraq’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Abbas Kadhim Obaid, emphasized “support for developing countries’ goals in economic, technological, and social development” in describing Iraq’s vision for its upcoming role. He promised to ensure the success of the presidency and emphasized Iraq’s dedication to the group’s fundamental principles.

“Iraq will be chairing the G77 and China for the first time since its establishment, of which Iraq was a founding member 60 years ago,” the statement reads.

At the meeting, everyone agreed that China and the G77, the largest UN bloc with 134 members, should appoint Iraq as chair.
