Iran, Kurdistan sign trade agreement to boost economic ties

On Wednesday, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported that the Chambers of Commerce of Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran’s Arvand Free Zone—which includes Abadan, Khorramshahr, and Minushahr (Minu Island)—had signed an economic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate joint trade.

The Arvand Free Zone, which is in western Iran and is strategically located near Iraq and Kuwait at the point where the Arvand and Karun rivers meet, offers advantageous land, rail, sea, and air transport connections.

IRNA states that “Arvand Free Zone is one of Iran’s largest and most important commercial and industrial free zones, given its proximity to the Persian Gulf and its well-developed network of international ports, a modern airport, and an extensive road and rail system,” Arvand Free Zone is one of Iran’s largest and most important free zones. It is a prime location for trade and investment with neighboring nations, including the Kurdistan Region, because of these characteristics.

Mustafa Abdul Rahman Abdullah, head of Kurdistan’s Exporters and Importers Union, praised Iran’s assistance during “difficult times” in his remarks about the MoU. He emphasized the long-standing economic ties between the region and Iran.

Abdullah emphasized that “a significant portion of Kurdistan’s imports and exports pass through Iranian borders,” and he mentioned ongoing efforts to increase the volume of trade with Iran.
