The Ninth Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced major progress in its efforts to achieve a continuous, 24-hour power supply across the Kurdistan Region, following a significant expansion of generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure.
According to an official statement, the KRG has increased electricity generation capacity by 1,840 megawatts (MW) through the construction of new power stations, alongside the completion of 3,503 distribution projects and 61 transmission projects aimed at reinforcing the regional power grid.
🏗️ Power Projects Strengthening the Grid
Among the most notable power generation developments under the Ninth Cabinet are the Garmian, Khurmala, Bazian, and Khabat stations — projects that have substantially expanded the region’s electricity output and reliability.
Key achievements in electricity generation and infrastructure include:
- ⚡ +1,840 MW increase in total generation capacity
- 🔌 3,503 distribution projects completed
- 🏗️ 61 transmission projects implemented
- 🔥 550 MW added through thermal power generation
- 🌞 500 MW developed in clean and renewable energy
- ⚙️ 500 MW of combined-cycle power capacity established
- ♻️ 290 MW generated from waste gas recovery
These initiatives collectively aim to ensure uninterrupted power delivery, reduce load-shedding, and modernize the region’s energy framework.
🔋 Electricity Generation Mix
The KRG’s current electricity generation composition reflects a balanced strategy between traditional and cleaner energy sources:
- Natural Gas: 83%
- Hydropower: 1%
- Crude Oil: 11%
- Petrol: 5%
The government emphasized that while natural gas remains the dominant energy source, growing investments in renewables and cleaner fuels are central to long-term sustainability goals.
🌍 Environmental Protection and Clean Energy
In parallel with its infrastructure expansion, the KRG has introduced a series of environmental protection measures to ensure that power sector growth aligns with sustainable development principles.
Efforts include the adoption of waste-gas utilization technologies, reduction of carbon emissions, and the integration of solar and combined-cycle systems designed to boost efficiency and lower pollution levels.
🗣️ Government Commitment
Officials from the Ministry of Electricity stated that the 24-hour power target represents one of the Ninth Cabinet’s top priorities. The recent expansion and modernization projects are expected to improve service stability, attract industrial investment, and enhance quality of life across the Kurdistan Region.
The ministry reaffirmed that these efforts are part of a comprehensive energy strategy focused on sustainable growth, clean energy diversification, and self-sufficiency in power generation.
