The head of the Border Ports Authority, Omar al-Waeli, said Saturday that trade into Iraq will continue smoothly even if any seaport is closed, thanks to alternative land routes.

In a statement followed by dinaropinions.com, al-Waeli said all staff are currently present at the country’s seaports and have started processing containers after completing the required procedures. He added that port departments, especially customs, have been strengthened with additional staff to speed up the entry of goods.

According to al-Waeli, teams are now working around the clock to process containers and help ensure local markets continue receiving supplies.

He also said the Authority is implementing Cabinet Resolution No. 100 of 2026, which includes measures aimed at speeding up the release of containers and making trade procedures faster.

Al-Waeli noted that several land crossings can serve as key alternatives if any sea route is disrupted. These include Trebil Border Crossing, Arar Border Crossing, Safwan Border Crossing, and Al-Qaim Border Crossing.

He stressed that the Authority is operating 24 hours a day under a clear plan to make sure goods and merchandise continue entering the country, keeping imports and trade with neighboring countries running without disruption.
