Iraq’s Foreign Ministry has set up a new high-level committee with one clear goal: improve the strength of the Iraqi passport.

Right now, the passport ranks among the weakest globally, which makes travel difficult for many Iraqis. Officials say that needs to change.

The new committee will focus on expanding visa-free access and building agreements with more countries. The idea is to make it easier for Iraqis to travel, study, and do business abroad.

There has already been some progress. Iraq has visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to several countries, including Iran, Tunisia, and Lebanon. Travelers can also visit places like Malaysia, Turkey, the Maldives, Seychelles, and others with fewer restrictions.

Now, the government wants to grow that list even further.

Officials say improving travel access is not just about convenience. It’s also about opening doors—helping Iraqis connect with the world, explore opportunities, and strengthen cultural and economic ties.

In simple terms, this move is about giving Iraqi citizens more freedom to move and making the country more connected globally.
