Iraqi MP Alaa al-Haidari warned on Sunday about what he described as continued “American control” over Iraq’s oil sales and financial resources.
He said that the role of the United States in Iraq is not just military, but also economic. According to him, Washington is influencing key financial areas in ways that affect the country’s sovereignty and put pressure on its economy.
Al-Haidari explained that issues like gas imports and oil sales are critical national matters, and any outside control over them undermines Iraq’s independence.
He also claimed that the U.S. is using its military presence as a way to apply political and economic pressure on Iraq. In his view, the continued presence of foreign forces is mainly about protecting American interests, even if it comes at the expense of Iraq’s stability.
He added that these policies have contributed to economic difficulties for ordinary Iraqis, affecting livelihoods and daily life.
Al-Haidari stressed that Iraq needs to take back full control of its economic and financial decisions. He believes that ending what he called external interference is the only way to protect the country’s resources and improve conditions for its people.
