Javier Milei is facing fresh scrutiny after new phone records revealed multiple calls with an entrepreneur linked to the Libra project.
According to reports, Milei had seven phone conversations with the individual on the same night he promoted the token on X. These calls happened both before and after his post, though investigators haven’t shared what was discussed.
This raises questions because Milei had previously said he had no real connection to the project. At the time, he described his post as simply supporting a private initiative and said he stopped promoting it once he learned more.
The controversy centers around what happened next. After Milei’s endorsement, the Libra token briefly surged in value—but then collapsed, losing more than 96% of its price. The crash wiped out around $251 million in investor funds and led to accusations that it may have been a “rug pull.”
Following the fallout, legal complaints were filed against Milei, and some political figures even called for his impeachment. Prosecutors opened an investigation and named him as a person of interest, and the case is still ongoing.
Argentina’s Anti-Corruption Office later said Milei didn’t break public ethics rules, arguing that his post was made in a personal capacity, not as president.
But new findings have added more pressure. Investigators also found a draft document on the phone of crypto lobbyist Mauricio Novelli. The note mentioned a possible $5 million arrangement tied to the Libra promotion, created just days before Milei’s post—though it didn’t clearly say who the money was for.
In simple terms, the situation is still unfolding. The new call records don’t prove wrongdoing on their own, but they do raise more questions about Milei’s connection to the project and what really happened behind the scenes.
