The cash credit ratio to total deposits in the Iraqi banking system increased from 47 percent in 2022 to 52 percent in 2023, according to the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI). In 2021, it was almost 55 percent.
The Central Bank pointed out that, notwithstanding the increase, the ratio remained below the 75 percent benchmark that the bank had established.
Banks must have enough cash on hand to process withdrawals from customers and carry out other banking operations.
