KRG Launches Second Phase of Major Erbil Wastewater Treatment Project
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has laid the foundation stone for the second phase of the Erbil Wastewater Treatment Plant, one of the largest environmental infrastructure projects in the region.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is investing $579 million into this phase of the project, which will be built over 205 acres in western Erbil. Once completed, the facility will be able to treat 840,000 cubic metres of wastewater per day, covering both black and grey water. The system is designed to support the city’s needs for the next 30 years as Erbil continues to grow.
Local firm Awzan will implement the second phase, following the completion of phase one by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Key Components of Phase Two
1. Expanded Sewer Network
– Construction of 21.9 km of new sewer lines
– Includes 5.3 km installed using Pipe Jacking technology, allowing underground work with no street disruption
2. Modern Treatment Plant
– Multi-stage processing including screening, aeration, and filtration
– Treated water will be reused for agriculture and other non-potable purposes
3. Two-Year Operation & Maintenance Period
– Ensures the plant operates efficiently and sustainably after construction
Environmental and Public Health Benefits
This major infrastructure upgrade will:
- Protect natural water resources and preserve groundwater
- Reduce waterborne diseases
- Strengthen sustainable agriculture through the reuse of treated water
- Align with international environmental standards
Once operational, the expanded Erbil Wastewater Treatment Plant is expected to significantly improve environmental quality and public health, supporting a cleaner, healthier urban future for the Kurdistan Region.
