Turkish lira hits record low, Central Bank holds interest rates

Despite months of relative stability following years of decline, the Turkish lira reached a new record low against the US dollar on Friday.

Despite being lower than Thursday’s closing level, the currency fell 0.5 percent to 32.9945 against the dollar at 0656 GMT, marking an increase from its earlier unprecedented low.

The currency’s value against the dollar has fallen by more than 11% in 2024, and by more than 40% since the year 2023 began.

At its last gathering, the Turkish National Bank chose to hold loan fees unaltered at 50% for the second sequential month.
