Independent Kurdish politician Saman Ali has criticized the Kurdistan Region’s Ronaki electricity privatization project, claiming that the initiative could generate more than 90 billion Iraqi dinars in monthly revenues.

Speaking on Thursday, Ali alleged that the project, which aims to privatize electricity services in parts of the Kurdistan Region, is being overseen by Masrour Barzani and is linked to interests associated with the ruling political establishment.

According to Ali, the project’s revenues could exceed 90 billion dinars per month if the regional government continues with its implementation plans. He claimed that electricity pricing under the new system is significantly higher than previous government-subsidized rates, resulting in substantial profits for investors involved in the project.

Ali also said that residents in the district of Penjwen have opposed the project and threatened to organize large-scale demonstrations. He stated that local residents are demanding greater transparency regarding the investment process and the selection of the company or individuals responsible for managing the project.

The politician further argued that economic conditions for many citizens in the Kurdistan Region have become increasingly difficult. He accused the region’s ruling parties of maintaining control over key sectors and transferring public service projects to private investors.

Ali’s comments reflect his personal views and allegations regarding the Ronaki project. No official response from the Kurdistan Regional Government or project administrators was included regarding the claims, and the allegations have not been independently verified.

The debate over electricity privatization has become a sensitive issue in parts of the Kurdistan Region, with supporters arguing that private investment can improve service quality and infrastructure, while critics have raised concerns about pricing, transparency, and the impact on consumers.
