Belarusian Ambassador to Iraq Anatoly Glaz visited Baghdad from Sept. 1 to 3 for a series of high-level meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation across economic, security, judicial, energy and commercial sectors.
During the visit, Ambassador Glaz presented copies of his credentials to Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. The two sides discussed efforts to revitalize Belarus-Iraq relations, including plans to resume the Joint Belarusian-Iraqi Commission on Economic Cooperation, restart consultations between the foreign ministries and expand business engagement between companies from both countries.
The discussions also focused on finalizing several draft intergovernmental agreements intended to provide a broader framework for future cooperation. Glaz conveyed an official invitation from Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov to Minister Hussein to visit Minsk, including participation in the Fourth Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security scheduled for Nov. 3-4.
On the same day, the Belarusian ambassador met with Abdul Amir al-Shammari, head of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Iraq’s Armed Forces. Talks centered on regional security developments and opportunities to enhance cooperation between relevant security and defense institutions in both countries.
The following day, Glaz held discussions with Faiq Zidan, President of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council. The meeting focused on following up commitments made during Zidan’s previous visit to Belarus and exploring ways to strengthen institutional and legal cooperation between the judicial systems of the two countries.
On Sept. 3, Glaz met with Minister of Electricity Ali Saad Wahib to discuss Belarusian participation in the modernization of Iraq’s electricity sector. The talks examined potential cooperation in supplying equipment, technical expertise and components that could support efforts to improve Iraq’s power infrastructure.
As part of the visit, the ambassador also participated in a business forum organized by the Belarusian Embassy in Baghdad. Representatives from Belarusian pharmaceutical companies attended the event, which highlighted opportunities for cooperation in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, industry, energy and the supply of Belarusian machinery and equipment to the Iraqi market.
The visit reflects growing efforts by both countries to restore and expand bilateral relations after years of limited engagement. Economic cooperation, infrastructure development and increased private-sector partnerships emerged as key priorities, while discussions on security and judicial collaboration demonstrated a broader commitment to strengthening institutional ties.
The meetings concluded with both sides expressing interest in advancing practical cooperation and accelerating work on pending agreements that could open new opportunities for trade, investment and technical collaboration between Belarus and Iraq.
