Iraq’s Ministry of Finance has held discussions with a delegation from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) regarding potential financing for major infrastructure projects and support for the country’s development priorities.
The AIIB delegation, headed by Konstantin Limitovsky, met with Iraqi officials to review opportunities for cooperation across several key sectors. Discussions focused on the bank’s experience financing transport, energy, water and digital infrastructure projects throughout the region and the potential application of that expertise in Iraq.
During the talks, AIIB representatives expressed the bank’s readiness to support and finance priority projects identified by the Iraqi government. Particular attention was given to strategic infrastructure initiatives, including the Development Road project, which is considered one of Iraq’s most ambitious economic and transportation programs aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and trade.
Finance Minister Faleh Sari emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation with international financial institutions to support Iraq’s long-term development objectives. He noted that partnerships with organizations such as the AIIB can help provide the financial resources and technical expertise needed to advance major infrastructure projects.
The minister also stressed that any proposed projects would undergo comprehensive evaluation before approval. According to Sari, project assessments will focus on economic feasibility, financing efficiency, sustainability and fiscal responsibility to ensure that investments generate long-term benefits for the Iraqi economy.
The discussions reflect Iraq’s broader efforts to attract international financing for infrastructure modernization, improve public services and diversify economic growth beyond the oil sector. Investments in transportation networks, energy systems, water infrastructure and digital connectivity are viewed as critical components of the country’s development strategy.
The Development Road project remains a central priority within these plans, with Iraqi officials seeking international partnerships to help transform the country into a major regional transit and logistics hub linking the Gulf region with Europe and neighboring markets.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing interest in strengthening cooperation and exploring practical mechanisms for financing infrastructure projects that support Iraq’s economic development and modernization goals.
