Oil and gas under scrutiny: Al-Hamami identifies "red zones" for cancer in Iraq

Former MP Arif al-Hamami has called for urgent government action to assist areas in southern Iraq that he says are experiencing the highest cancer rates in the country.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com, al-Hamami stated that five areas in southern Iraq, located near producing oil and gas fields, have recorded particularly high rates of cancer. He described these locations as “red zones” because of the growing number of cases.

He stressed the need for additional support for residents in these areas, including the construction of specialized hospitals and the creation of a dedicated support fund to help families cope with the high cost of medical treatment.

Al-Hamami said many patients face significant financial burdens while seeking care, making government assistance increasingly important.

He also called for greater attention to the environmental impact of oil and gas production activities. According to al-Hamami, pollution associated with these operations can affect public health and the surrounding environment, potentially contributing to higher rates of serious illnesses, including cancer.

The former lawmaker urged authorities to expand healthcare services, improve medical infrastructure and provide direct support to communities living near major energy production sites.

He emphasized that addressing health and environmental challenges in these areas should be a priority, given the concerns raised by local residents and the increasing demand for specialized medical care.
