Iraq has started importing its first gasoline shipments through Syria as part of efforts to address the fuel shortage affecting Baghdad and several other provinces.
According to an Iraqi oil source, the first batch arrived at Syria’s Baniyas port, where fuel is now being loaded onto tanker trucks for transport into Iraq. Details about the total quantity, the supplier, and the exact route into Iraq are expected to become clear once the deliveries are completed.
The move comes as Iraq continues to face gasoline shortages that have lasted for weeks. Many fuel stations have experienced supply problems, leading to long lines of vehicles and the temporary closure of numerous stations across the country.
Although the situation briefly improved last month, shortages soon returned. Earlier this month, Oil Minister Basim Mohammed Khudair said the ministry was working to resolve the crisis and promised that additional fuel shipments would arrive to help stabilize supplies.
The new imports through Syria are expected to provide some relief while Iraq works to restore normal fuel availability across the country.
