MP Mohammed Qutaiba al-Bayati has expressed his opposition to the proposed electricity privatization project in residential areas west of Baquba, citing concerns about its impact on local residents.
Al-Bayati said he rejects the project for three main reasons: the additional financial burden it could place on citizens, the difficult economic conditions in the province, and the concerns raised by residents.
He explained that many families, particularly those with limited incomes, would struggle with the extra costs that could result from privatizing electricity services. According to him, efforts to improve electricity supply should focus on enhancing service quality without creating new expenses for citizens.
Al-Bayati also pointed to the economic challenges facing Diyala, including rising poverty and unemployment rates. He said any decision on the privatization project should be carefully studied to assess its potential effects on residents and to address public concerns.
He emphasized that electricity sector reforms should consider the living conditions of citizens and aim to provide better services without increasing the financial pressure on households. According to Al-Bayati, improving electricity supply should not come at the expense of families already facing economic hardship.
