Iraqi MP Nour al-Juhayshi has threatened to boycott the federal budget vote if the government continues to maintain the dollar exchange rate at its current high level without taking steps to reduce it.

Al-Juhayshi told dinaropinions.com/ that Parliament should not approve the draft budget unless the government and the Central Bank of Iraq review their currency policies and reverse the exchange rate increase. She said the higher rate has put pressure on citizens and disrupted local markets.

She warned that approving the budget without changing the exchange rate would keep inflation high and further weaken the purchasing power of low- and middle-income families.

Al-Juhayshi also said a broader parliamentary movement is forming to push for a lower dollar exchange rate and changes to monetary policy. She said these steps should be taken to protect people’s living standards before Parliament votes on the budget.
