Parliamentary Communications Committee: The government is turning a blind eye to collecting $2 billion from mobile phone companies.

Baghdad — MP Zahra Al-Bajari, head of the Parliamentary Transportation and Communications Committee, has criticized the federal government and the Media and Communications Commission for ignoring billions in unpaid fees owed by mobile phone companies.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com, Al-Bajari said, “Korek Telecommunications received its operating license back in 2008, but the Media and Communications Commission failed to collect the large sums owed by the company — amounts that now exceed two billion dollars.”

She added, “Our committee had previously arranged for the company to pay these dues in installments, but they failed to honor their commitments. The government and the Media and Communications Commission are fully responsible for this failure.”

Al-Bajari stressed that the mobile sector is a major financial resource for Iraq, capable of generating significant revenue for the state treasury if managed properly. She called on the government to establish a national mobile company as a way to reduce corruption in this vital sector.
