Green Iraqi Innovators Conference Highlights Youth-Led Climate Solutions
More than sixty young innovators — including a strong representation of talented young women — gathered at the American University of Iraq–Baghdad (AUIB) for the Green Iraqi Innovators Conference and Competition, an event aimed at empowering youth-driven environmental solutions.
The conference was organized by the UN Youth Advisory Council (UNYAC) and AUIB’s Green Club, in collaboration with the United Nations in Iraq, and coordinated by the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO).
Speaking on behalf of UN Resident Coordinator Ghulam M. Isaczai, Ms. Hind Jalal, UNFPA Representative in Iraq, praised the creativity, resilience, and determination of Iraq’s young people. She emphasized the need to give equal opportunities to both young women and men to build a sustainable future.
Jalal highlighted that environmental progress in Iraq cannot be separated from broader development challenges. With youth unemployment over 31% — and 40% for young women — she stressed that closing these gaps is essential for unlocking Iraq’s potential.
“Iraq’s future lies not only in its rich history and natural resources, but in the boundless creativity and determination of its young people,” she said.
Innovation, Competition, and Climate Action
The event included:
- A panel titled “The Future of Green Innovation in Iraq” with experts from the UN, academia, and private sector.
- A youth competition where six teams presented practical ideas in renewable energy, sustainability, waste management, and green technology.
Judges from FAO, the Iraq Green Building Council, and the Center for Climate Change, Water Security, and Environmental Sustainability selected three standout projects:
1. Fuel and Lead — by Yaqoob & Arwa
A research project studying the environmental and health risks of leaded fuel. Their work includes field sampling, data analysis, and community campaigns urging stricter fuel regulations to protect public health — especially children.
2. ABZU Project — by Ameer Saad
A dual-function system that produces clean energy while purifying water. Designed to be affordable and scalable, ABZU aims to support communities with resource shortages.
3. Climate Change Consultant Internship (CCCI) — by Qaysar Alwardi
A six-month programme training Iraq’s first generation of climate consultants through workshops, scientific sessions, field studies, and partnerships with green companies.
Youth Leading Iraq’s Green Future
The atmosphere throughout the conference was energetic and hopeful. Participants showcased fresh ideas on renewable energy, recycling systems, sustainable architecture, and eco-tech innovations.
Ms. Hind Jalal praised the passion shown by both young women and men, noting that Iraq’s youth are not waiting for solutions — they’re creating them.
Organized under the theme “Youth for a Sustainable Iraq,” the conference provided young innovators with a platform to share ideas, connect with mentors, and explore new avenues for climate action.
The event forms part of the UN’s ongoing work to advance youth participation, women’s empowerment, and sustainable development in Iraq.
