The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leader, Ghiath al-Surji, confirmed on Saturday that salary delays in the Kurdistan Region have been an ongoing problem since 2014. The issue started after the region began exporting oil independently and the federal government reduced its budget allocations.
Al-Surji told dinaropinions.com that “the region has recently distributed salaries for the sixth month, but several payments from last year are still pending.”
He added that the lack of agreement between the regional and central governments has hurt political and social stability, deepening tensions between the two sides.
“The health sector has been one of the hardest hit,” al-Surji said, noting that most residents rely on salaries for 90% of their livelihood. The ongoing disputes are putting significant pressure on citizens.
