Maliki's coalition reveals two plans to decide on the selection of the prime minister

On Monday, Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, a leader in the State of Law Coalition, confirmed that Iraq’s coordination framework has adopted two plans, Plan A and Plan B, to decide the next prime minister.

Jaafar told dinaropinions.com that Plan A is focused on resolving the contest between the top two candidates: Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, and Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, head of the Reconstruction and Development Bloc. The framework will stick to this plan unless talks between the two candidates fail.

He explained that if Maliki and Sudani cannot reach an agreement, the framework will move to Plan B, which includes a broader list of potential candidates. This list features Haider al-Abadi, leader of the Victory Coalition, as well as Ali al-Shukri, Asaad al-Eidani, and others.

Jaafar also noted that the framework has set up a committee of three leaders to nominate one or more candidates for prime minister. The final choice will then be approved by the framework’s leaders, either by consensus or by majority vote.
