Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity has held talks with the Japan International Cooperation about developing solar energy projects and expanding the use of clean energy in homes.

The meeting was chaired by Hussein Mohammed Badr, Director General of the ministry’s Planning and Studies Department. Mortada Hussein Mahdi, head of the Renewable Energy Centre, also attended.

Officials discussed the ministry’s planned solar projects, including how contracts are awarded and how solar systems are connected to the national electricity grid.

JICA expressed interest in financing and implementing solar projects included in the ministry’s plans. The agency also said it intends to prepare a feasibility study on financing home solar systems, following a model similar to an initiative launched by the Central Bank of Iraq.

The proposed study aims to explore ways to help more households adopt solar energy and increase its contribution to meeting Iraq’s electricity needs. The discussions form part of the ministry’s wider efforts to expand renewable energy and reduce reliance on conventional power sources.
