On the water issue, Iraq is playing its international cards to break Ankara's silence.

Member of Parliament Ahmed al-Badri says Iraq needs to take the water crisis with Turkey more seriously — even if that means bringing the issue to the UN Security Council.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com, al-Badri said, “Iraq must use economic pressure to secure the water share it needs.” He explained that if Turkey continues to limit water flow, Iraq has other steps it can take, including filing an official complaint at the Security Council, especially since both countries share the same rivers.

However, al-Badri pointed out that Iraq is not yet ready to use strong economic pressure against Turkey. The reason, he said, is simple: Iraq’s industrial sector is weak, and the lack of factories means any economic measures could end up hurting Iraq more than Turkey.

He stressed that while economic pressure is effective, Iraq needs to strengthen its internal capabilities first so it can negotiate from a stronger position in the future.
