The State of Law Coalition says political forces within the Coordination Framework are preparing to hold an extraordinary meeting soon to settle the remaining issues related to cabinet formation and fill vacant ministerial positions.
Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, a leader in the coalition, said a recent meeting of Coordination Framework leaders at the home of Haider al-Abadi lasted for several hours and included discussions on a number of important political matters.
According to Jaafar, one of the main topics was the ongoing disagreement over how the remaining ministerial portfolios should be distributed. He explained that these differences still need to be resolved, which is why another special meeting is expected in the near future.
He said leaders agreed that leaving key government positions vacant for a long period is not in the country’s interest and stressed the need to complete the cabinet as soon as possible.
Jaafar expressed confidence that an agreement can be reached soon, adding that the remaining ministerial appointments are expected to be presented to Parliament for a vote at the beginning of July.
If the timeline holds, the vote would take place around the end of the current legislative session of the Council of Representatives, allowing the government to move forward with a fully completed cabinet.
The planned meeting is seen as an important step toward resolving political differences and finalizing the remaining government positions after months of discussions among the major political blocs.
