MP: The next parliament is required to activate its oversight role over the government's performance

MP Hamid Al-Shablawi said on Saturday that activating Parliament’s oversight role is critical, stressing that strong parliamentary supervision is the main way to stop abuses and protect public money.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com, Al-Shablawi said the oversight role of the House of Representatives in recent years has not been strong enough. He explained that the government needs close and continuous monitoring by Parliament to make sure plans and programs are carried out in the best interest of the country.

He added that real parliamentary oversight would help restore public trust in state institutions and reduce both administrative and financial corruption. Al-Shablawi stressed that the next parliament carries a major responsibility to fully use its constitutional powers, especially when it comes to summoning officials and holding interrogations.

He also pointed out that the House of Representatives is constitutionally required to oversee all branches of the state under Article 61 of the Iraqi Constitution. He emphasized the need to actively use all oversight tools, including questioning officials, holding hearings, and conducting formal interrogations.
