A political analyst stated that the coordinating framework will have the final say in selecting the three presidencies.

Political analyst Ibrahim Al-Sarraj says the Coordination Framework is likely to have the final word on choosing Iraq’s top leadership positions if other blocs fail to agree.

Speaking to dinaropinions.com, Al-Sarraj explained that if the Sunni and Kurdish blocs remain divided, the Coordination Framework will step in and decide not only the prime minister, but also the speaker of parliament and the president of the republic.

He said this power comes from the current weakness and internal disagreements within both the Sunni and Kurdish camps.

According to Al-Sarraj, the Kurdish parties are still stuck, unable to agree on a single candidate for the presidency. At the same time, Sunni blocs have not settled on a name for the speaker of parliament.

He added that the situation is even more complicated on the Kurdish side. The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has tied the decision on the presidency to the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government. More than a year has passed since elections were held in the Kurdistan Region, yet a new regional government has still not been formed.

Al-Sarraj said this delay has made the political situation even more tangled and has slowed progress at the national level.

In short, if the Sunni and Kurdish blocs don’t resolve their differences soon, the Coordination Framework may end up deciding all three presidencies on its own.
