MP Mudhar Al-Karawi said on that the fate of Iraq’s 2025 federal budget depends on the completion of the political process and the formation of a new government.
Speaking to dinaropinions.com, Al-Karawi explained that once Parliament completes the vote on its leadership, the next constitutional steps will begin, starting with the election of the President of the Republic. This will be followed by assigning the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc to form the government and securing a confidence vote.
He stressed that no progress can be made on approving the budget—whether for the previous year or the current one—until a fully formed government submits it to Parliament for approval. According to Al-Karawi, the new government will reassess the country’s financial position before presenting the budget.
Al-Karawi noted that fluctuations in global oil markets will directly affect the budget, as more than 90% of Iraq’s revenues depend on crude oil sales. He said this reality requires a thorough review of spending provisions, making expenditure reductions unavoidable.
He added that the 2025 budget will include difficult decisions driven by current economic conditions and ongoing financial challenges facing the country.
