Al-Lami: Iraq is nearing self-sufficiency in gas.

MP Ali al-Lami confirmed on Thursday that Iraq is on track to achieve gas self-sufficiency sooner than expected, now targeting the first quarter of 2027.

Al-Lami told dinaropinions.com, “The plan to end flaring of associated gas in oil fields and reach gas self-sufficiency has reached advanced stages. The timeline has been shortened by about 20%, and we expect an official announcement in early 2027.”

He explained that stopping gas flaring will have many benefits, including reducing environmental and health impacts, providing more gas for electricity generation, and supporting national industries.

Al-Lami added that ongoing projects to develop gas fields will boost production across the country, lower reliance on imports, and help Iraq achieve full self-sufficiency in this crucial energy resource.
