Khor Mor fault sparks power cuts across Kurdistan

Parts of Erbil, Duhok, and Al-Sulaymaniyah lost power shortly after midnight on Tuesday, according to the Kurdistan Region’s Electricity Ministry.

In a statement, the ministry said the outage was caused by a technical fault and stressed that the situation was under control. Repair teams were sent out right away, and officials said electricity was expected to return within about an hour.

A Shafaq News correspondent reported that the outage was linked to a problem at the Khor Mor gas field in the Chamchamal district of Al-Sulaymaniyah. The field is a major supplier of gas to power plants across the Kurdistan Region.

This is not the first time issues at Khor Mor have affected electricity in the Region. In late November 2025, a rocket attack near the field forced operations to stop temporarily, leading to widespread power cuts. Earlier, in April 2024, a drone attack on the site killed workers and disrupted gas supplies.

These repeated incidents highlight how closely the Region’s power grid depends on Khor Mor—and how vulnerable electricity supply can be when problems occur there.
