$65bn Investment Planned for Al-Tayeb Economic City

Iraq is planning a massive new project at the Al-Tayeb border area — and the numbers are huge.

According to the National Investment Commission (NIC), a $65-billion investment is being prepared to turn Al-Tayeb into a multi-service economic city.

NIC Chairman Haider Mohammed Makkiya said the project will cover more than 120,000 dunams of land. If completed as planned, it would become one of the largest investment zones in the country.

Out of the total $65 billion, around $5 billion will go toward basic infrastructure. That includes:

  • Roads
  • Electricity networks
  • Sewerage systems
  • Other essential utilities

Makkiya explained that the area, located in Maysan Governorate, has strong natural advantages. It has water resources, fuel access, sand and gravel, and suitable land. All of this makes it ideal for building a specialized economic city.

One part of the project is still not finished — a water-harvesting system. Once that is completed, the government could officially announce the project as an investment opportunity within the next few months.

Makkiya also revealed that six investment cities have already been identified across Iraq. These locations were chosen based on their natural resources. Some of these multi-service economic cities could be developed along the Development Road corridor, which is designed to boost trade and transport across the country.

If this plan moves forward, it could reshape the Al-Tayeb border area into a major economic hub. But for now, investors are waiting for the official launch announcement.
