US Embassy in Baghdad has issued a strong security warning, telling American citizens not to travel to Iraq and urging those already there to leave immediately.

In its alert, the embassy said the decision is based on rising security threats, including attacks targeting Americans and US-related interests. It warned that Iran-backed militias are carrying out widespread strikes across the country, including in the Kurdistan Region.

Despite the warning, the embassy said it remains open to assist US citizens. However, it advised people not to approach the embassy in Baghdad or the consulate in Erbil due to ongoing risks from missiles and drones.

The alert also highlighted broader dangers. According to the embassy, Iran and affiliated groups pose a serious threat to public safety, with past attacks targeting diplomatic sites, companies, energy facilities, airports, and hotels used by foreigners. There is also concern about the risk of kidnappings.

Travel options are currently limited. Iraqi airspace is closed, meaning no commercial flights are operating. Land routes to neighboring countries—such as Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey—are still open, but long delays are expected.

The embassy has suspended routine services, including visa processing, and is advising US citizens to leave as soon as possible. It also urged people to avoid crowds, follow local authority guidance, keep essential supplies like food and medicine, and stay updated through official channels.

In short, the situation is being treated as highly serious, with US officials calling for immediate action to ensure personal safety.
