Former Iraqi MP Raed al-Maliki called on Parliament on Saturday to move quickly on passing important laws, especially the one related to the Popular Mobilization Forces.
He said the country is at a critical stage and needs serious action from lawmakers to strengthen its security system through clear and strong legal support. In his view, the PMF Law should be at the top of the priority list because it plays a key role in maintaining stability.
Al-Maliki explained that protecting Iraq’s sovereignty—both from internal and external threats—requires officially organizing these forces and guaranteeing their rights under the law.
He also warned that delaying such legislation does not help the country, especially at a time when Iraq continues to face security challenges.
In the end, he urged all political groups to come together and overcome both political disagreements and technical issues that are slowing things down. He stressed that a strong state begins with strong and well-organized security institutions that can defend the country against any threat.
