Former Iraqi MP Yasser al-Husseini said that Iraq has a real opportunity to strengthen and revive its economy by tackling corruption, removing corrupt officials, and closely monitoring major government projects.
Al-Husseini stated that some individuals accused of corruption have secured large contracts tied to important strategic projects in Iraq. According to him, these long-term agreements generate huge revenues worth tens of billions of dinars every month.
He said that if the government is serious about economic reform, there are many corruption cases that can be investigated and addressed. Doing so, he argued, would help stop the waste of both oil and non-oil revenues that continues to drain public resources.
Al-Husseini also stressed that there are practical and straightforward steps that can be taken to improve oversight of state funds and revenues. He believes stronger financial control would help preserve national wealth, support economic recovery, and strengthen Iraq’s economic independence.
He added that protecting public funds and ensuring proper management of major projects could play an important role in boosting the economy and supporting long-term development across the country.
