Two workers from a seismic survey team were injured on Sunday when a landmine exploded in the Basya desert in the far south of Iraq’s Al-Muthanna Governorate.

A security source said the explosion targeted a team working on oil and gas exploration in the Badia Basya area. Both workers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, a joint security force sealed off the site and began searching the surrounding area.

The source added that the region contains many landmines left over from previous wars, particularly those dating back to the period after 1991. These explosives continue to cause injuries and deaths from time to time, especially among shepherds and workers operating in the area.
