A new Kurdish alliance will change the equation... The Yekiti and the New Generation are nearing an agreement.

A senior figure in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Ghiath al-Surji, has confirmed that the party is close to officially signing a new alliance with the New Generation Movement, with the agreement expected to be finalized within the next few days.

Al-Surji explained that the signing process was delayed because of the travel schedule of PUK leader Bafel Talabani, but said preparations for the alliance are now nearing completion.

According to al-Surji, the alliance will include the New Generation Movement as well as representatives from the Christian quota seats. Once finalized, the coalition would give the PUK and its allies a total number of seats equal to that of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

He stated that both sides would hold 39 seats each in the Kurdistan Parliament, creating a balanced political landscape and strengthening the PUK’s position in future negotiations over the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Al-Surji said this political balance would give the PUK greater leverage during talks on the distribution of senior government positions. He indicated that the party would seek either the presidency of the Kurdistan Region or the position of prime minister as part of any future power-sharing arrangement.

The expected alliance is seen as an important step in shaping the next phase of political negotiations in the Kurdistan Region, where discussions over government formation and the allocation of key leadership positions continue following recent political developments.

If completed, the agreement could significantly influence the balance of power between the PUK and the KDP and play a major role in determining the structure of the region’s next government.
