Amazon invests another $5 bn in Anthropic

Amazon is doubling down on AI in a big way, putting another $5 billion into Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot.

This brings Amazon’s total investment in Anthropic to about $13 billion so far. And it might not stop there — Amazon says it could invest up to $20 billion more if certain performance targets are met.

At the same time, Anthropic is making a huge commitment of its own. The company plans to spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next decade to power its AI systems.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the goal is simple: keep up with exploding demand for AI by building the infrastructure needed to support it.

And demand is clearly growing fast.

Anthropic recently said its annualized revenue has surged past $30 billion, even outpacing competitors like OpenAI for the first time. That kind of growth explains why both companies are going all in on this partnership.

But it’s not just about business — there’s also a political angle.

Earlier this year, tensions rose between Anthropic and the US government after the company refused to allow its AI to be used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. That led to pushback from officials, including action from the Trump administration to stop using its technology.

Now, the tone seems to be shifting.

Recent meetings between Anthropic leadership and US officials suggest both sides are exploring ways to work together, especially around managing the risks of advanced AI systems.

Still, the relationship isn’t fully settled. Anthropic has challenged some government actions in court, and disagreements over how AI should be used are still in the background.

On the tech side, the company is also being cautious.

It recently developed a new AI model called Mythos but decided not to release it publicly due to potential cybersecurity risks — a sign that even AI leaders are slowing down when the stakes get too high.

In simple terms, this deal shows where things are heading.

Amazon is betting big on AI infrastructure, Anthropic is scaling fast, and both are trying to balance growth with safety — all while navigating pressure from governments and global competition.
