Iraq and the United States have renewed their commitment to building a stronger partnership focused on security, economic growth, and long-term stability.
During talks between Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi and President Trump’s Special Envoy, Tom Barrack, both sides stressed their shared goal of creating a future where Iraq is sovereign, secure, and prosperous, while also delivering benefits to both Iraqi and American citizens.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Barrack delivered a message from President Trump expressing his desire to host Prime Minister Al-Zaidi at the White House in mid-July to discuss the future of US-Iraq relations.
A major part of the discussion focused on Iraq’s plans to strengthen state authority and improve security. The Iraqi government reaffirmed its commitment to disarming and dissolving all armed groups operating outside state control, ensuring that weapons remain exclusively in the hands of the government. Both sides agreed that these efforts are critical to protecting Iraq’s sovereignty and keeping the country away from regional conflicts.
The two leaders also discussed expanding economic ties. Prime Minister Al-Zaidi emphasized Iraq’s commitment to increasing trade and investment with the United States, a move that was welcomed by Barrack.
They praised Iraq’s decision to grant an operating license to Starlink, which is expected to bring high-speed internet services to consumers across the country. The talks also highlighted plans for Chevron to help develop the West Qurna-2 and Nasiriyah oil fields, while creating opportunities for greater cooperation between Iraqi and American energy companies.
Both sides welcomed efforts to allow HKN, Western Zagros, and Hunt to resume operations in Iraq under improved security conditions. They also discussed moving forward with plans to rehabilitate the Kirkuk-Banias oil pipeline, which could become an important route for future oil exports.
Energy cooperation was another key topic. Iraq and the United States agreed to work together on projects aimed at meeting Iraq’s growing electricity needs, including a floating liquefied natural gas import terminal planned for Khor al-Zubair.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their support for a strong, united, and sovereign Iraq. They emphasized the importance of constitutional institutions, equal rights for all citizens, and continued efforts to promote national unity, stability, and economic prosperity.
