Coinbase Launches 170+ Derivatives Contracts for UK Professional Investors
Coinbase has expanded its UK offerings by launching more than 170 derivatives contracts for eligible professional investors, giving clients access to leveraged trading across cryptocurrencies, commodities, equities, and foreign exchange markets.
The new product suite includes perpetual futures, dated futures, and crypto options, with access being rolled out gradually over the coming weeks and months.
Perpetual Futures Lead the Expansion
Perpetual futures represent the largest segment of the launch, covering more than 170 assets and supporting 24/7 trading. Professional traders can take both long and short positions, implement hedging strategies, and access leverage of up to 50x.
Unlike traditional futures contracts, perpetuals do not have expiration dates. Instead, positions remain open indefinitely, with funding mechanisms used to keep prices aligned with the underlying market.
Dated Futures and Crypto Options Added
Coinbase is also introducing dated futures, which settle on predetermined dates and offer leverage of up to 20x. Because these contracts expire, they do not require ongoing funding payments, with carrying costs incorporated into the contract price.
In addition, professional clients can trade crypto options, including call and put contracts. The platform supports both single-leg and multi-leg strategies such as spreads and combinations. Coinbase says traders will have access to payoff diagrams and risk-analysis tools that display potential profits, losses, and breakeven points before entering a trade.
Regulatory Approval Enables Launch
The rollout follows Coinbase’s recent MiFID investment services authorization, which expanded the range of regulated financial products the company can offer in the UK.
Access is limited to investors who meet Coinbase’s eligibility requirements and qualify as professional clients under applicable regulations.
The company believes the launch addresses growing demand for regulated derivatives products, noting that global crypto derivatives trading volume is often more than four times larger than spot market volume.
Part of Coinbase’s “Everything Exchange” Vision
The UK derivatives expansion is another step in Coinbase’s broader “Everything Exchange” strategy, which aims to combine crypto trading, stocks, commodities, derivatives, payments, lending, and other financial services within a single platform.
Over the past year, Coinbase has expanded beyond traditional cryptocurrency trading by introducing crypto-backed loans, stock investing, and institutional derivatives access in multiple jurisdictions.
The company recently launched access to thousands of U.S. stocks for eligible UK users and has continued building regulated derivatives offerings in the United States, Australia, and other international markets.
Growing Focus Beyond Spot Trading
Coinbase’s latest earnings report highlighted the company’s increasing diversification. According to the firm, 88% of net revenue now comes from sources other than Bitcoin spot trading, reflecting its push into subscriptions, institutional services, derivatives, and other financial products.
With the addition of leveraged futures and options, Coinbase is positioning itself as a broader multi-asset trading platform rather than solely a cryptocurrency exchange.
For UK professional investors, the launch provides access to institutional-grade trading tools within a regulated framework, while further advancing Coinbase’s goal of becoming a comprehensive financial services platform.
