Diyala begins initial assessment of fire that affected a major power substation near Baquba

The Diyala Provincial Council announced Friday that preliminary assessments have begun after a partial fire damaged sections of one of the province’s most important electricity substations near Baquba.

Council Chairman Omar al-Karawi said the fire erupted in one of the main transformers at the 400 kV substation, causing wider electricity outages across large parts of Diyala because the facility serves as a key hub in the province’s power grid.

According to al-Karawi, local authorities issued urgent directives to carry out an initial technical assessment to determine the scale of the damage before coordinating with authorities in Baghdad. Specialized engineering and technical teams are expected to be requested to help repair the damaged equipment and provide the materials needed to restore operations at the substation.

He added that civil defense teams managed to contain the fire within the first hour after it broke out, preventing further spread.

Investigations are still underway to determine the cause of the incident, while officials are also evaluating how the damage has affected electricity supplies from Iraq’s national grid and overall power availability across Diyala province.
