Economic researcher Hashem Al-Haboubi warned against granting American investment companies monopolistic control over Iraq’s key economic sectors during Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi’s visit to Washington.
Al-Haboubi stressed that while the visit is important, Iraq should avoid agreements that could give foreign companies excessive influence over strategic sectors or affect the country’s independent political decision-making. He emphasized the need to protect Iraq’s national interests and diversify international partnerships rather than relying on a single country.
He also pointed to previous experiences with American companies, claiming that several firms withdrew from projects before completion, causing delays in economic development. According to Al-Haboubi, future contracts should include strict legal protections, financial penalties, and clear obligations to prevent companies from abandoning projects.
The researcher highlighted the importance of distinguishing between genuine investment and economic monopoly, urging Iraqi negotiators to ensure that any agreements serve Iraq’s long-term interests.
Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi departed for Washington on Monday with a government and parliamentary delegation that includes the Finance Minister and the Central Bank Governor. The visit is expected to last one week and will focus on political, economic, and investment cooperation between Iraq and the United States.
